I've sort of been stuck in a music identity crisis. Like for my whole life.
7 year old me loved country music because my brothers loved it. A few favorites included "Drinkin' Bone," "Sold," and "Beer for my Horses." I don't think I knew what half of the songs I listened to were talking about...
In middle school and early high school I started listening to Lauren funky music and liking it. Owl City was a big deal to me here. Red Hot Chile Peppers may have influenced a little too. "Rhythm of Love," "Hot Air Balloon," and "Snow (Hey Oh)" come to mind. Oh, and we can't forget Abba.
I have lots of memories (from recently and from a loooong time ago) of singing with my mom and dad in the truck listening to songs like Kryptonite (our favorite), Mrs. Robinson, Stairway to Heaven, and Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay.
Kryptonite actually made a showing in the Daddy Daughter song at my wedding. We danced to "I Loved Her First." After it ended, we cut straight to Kryptonite. We started lip-singing it, and then all my cousins came and danced with us.

Later in high school I got into Mindy Gledhill and other songs that Josie and Kierstyn liked. I really love Mindy's Pocketful of Poetry album. My favorite song on there is "Picture Show." So cute. I'd say this was when I started to develop my own musical identity... A little. And this transitioned into:
Immediately post high school when I really liked cute little love songs. (Coincidence? I think NOT!) Because handsome Samual would find them and show them to her while they were on dates. As they avoided her curfew. ;) Some of my favorites from this time include "Never Stop" (also our wedding song), "Favorite Girl," and "Perfect Two" (I may have showed him this song... Found it in the search for my own music identity).
Funny story about "Perfect Two": This is where my blog title came from. "You can be the peanut butter to my jelly." And Samual and I were texting and he said that I was feisty and must be jalapeño jelly.
He also showed her some songs with serious emotion in them. Songs with emotion in them are some of Sam's favorites, so they became some of her favorites. When they weren't making her cry. A couple include "Annie" by Safetysuit and "Godspeed" by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (this one usually just makes her cry).
Which brings us to a list of a few of my current favorites.
And I mean VERY current. This list would probably have different songs if I wrote it tomorrow. Or in a few hours. But the gist of it is the same :)
So, in no particular order:
1. Happily Ever After by He is We
2. Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran
4. Annie by Safetysuit
5. My Front Porch Looking in by Lonestar
6. Icing by Charity Vance
7. All About Us by He is We, Owl City
8. Brave by Sara Bareilles
9. Here (In Your Arms) by Hellogoodbye
10. Fall For You by Secondhand Serenade
10. Fall For You by Secondhand Serenade
As I was making this list, I realized that, even though I didn't always have a distinct personal music taste, my music identity has definitely been shaped by the music my friends and family have liked over the years. Which means I still don't have my music identity completely formed, but it also means that I have tons of variety in the music I like. And I love that! And I love that I can put a person or memory with practically every song on my Spotify playlist. So enjoy these songs. I love them all. You may well hate half of them, but, with any luck, you'll really love the other half.
